Former State Governor of Light of the Nation (Anambra) and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government’s approval of ₦142 billion for the construction of bus terminals in the country’s six geopolitical zones.

Obi, on Friday, through his social media page said the allocation reflects “lack of competence, lack of focus and poor leadership,” stressing that such funds should have been channelled into critical sectors like healthcare.

“The recent announcement that a sum of ₦142 billion has been approved by the Federal Government for the construction of one bus terminal in each of our six geopolitical zones further affirms the lack of competence, lack of focus and poor leadership,” he stated.

Drawing a comparison with the 2024 budget, Obi hinted that all federal university teaching hospitals and psychiatric centres combined received less than ₦100 billion.

“This is disturbing, considering that health is one of the most critical areas of development, which is deteriorating and remains grossly underfunded. WHO recently reported that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues,” Obi said.

He described the development as a “tragic irony” that undermines national progress, adding that such decisions do not reflect governance in the true sense.

Obi concluded with his usual message of hope: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
