The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed that 379,997 candidates who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will retake the test following widespread issues during the conduct of the exercise.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, made this known at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, where he openly showed emotion, breaking down in tears while addressing the press.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over multiple complaints of technical faults, unexpected low scores, and reported irregularities at various examination centres across the country.

Professor Oloyede, visibly shaken, accepted full responsibility for the situation, attributing the failures to a combination of human lapses and technical disruptions.

He revealed that 206,610 candidates in Lagos and 173,387 across the South East—comprising Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Anambra—will be given another opportunity to sit for the examination.

The Registrar further stated that the affected candidates wrote the exam at 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres within the Owerri Zone.

JAMB has faced mounting criticism from students, parents, and education stakeholders following the release of the 2025 UTME results, which many described as unexpectedly poor and inconsistent with candidates’ performance expectations.

A new date for the rescheduled examination is expected to be announced soon.
