A legislative panel of the Green Chamber (HoR) is set to conduct a public hearing on a bill seeking to amend the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) Act.
The session is slated for Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Committee Room 107, House Wing, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, by 10:00 a.m.
The bill, which carries the titles HB.2022 and HB.2030, aims to revise the responsibilities and authority of the NSDC. A key provision of the proposed amendment is the directive that all revenues received by the Council be remitted to the Federation Account, in compliance with Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas (PhD, GCON) is expected to serve as the Chief Host of the legislative session organized by the House Committee on Industry.
Rep. Enitan Dolapo Badru, who chairs the committee, said the hearing is designed to reflect the commitment of the legislature to public engagement and fiscal accountability. He noted the review of the law is part of efforts to update the legal framework governing the sugar industry and ensure better coordination of revenue collection and sectoral growth.
The hearing will draw representatives from major public and private entities involved in sugar production and regulation. Among them are the Federal Ministries of Industry, Finance, Health, and Agriculture; the NSDC; NAFDAC; Customs; SON; and major industry players including Dangote Sugar, BUA Sugar, Flour Mills of Nigeria, Golden Sugar Company, and the Sugar Road Map Implementation Committee (SURMIC).
Interested members of the public and sector stakeholders are invited to participate and submit written memoranda. Submissions are to be directed to the Chairman, Committee on Industry and delivered to Room 458 in the House Wing of the National Assembly.
