The House of Representatives, Abuja has called for a two-day legislative meeting with major players in the pension sector beginning on Monday, in preparation for possible changes to the Pension Reform Act of 2014.

The gathering is organized by the House committee overseeing pension affairs in the green chamber. This is coming after a series of public concerns raised through two separate motions last year which led to an investigative session held from September 2 to 11, 2024.

Subjects of focus on the table include the management of pension funds and the struggles many retirees face under the current contributory scheme.

The engagement will be held on May 19 and 20 at the conference hall of the new legislative wing in Abuja, starting at 10:00 a.m. daily.

Chairman of the committee, Hussaini Jallo, noted that the meeting is part of a broader effort to carry all voices along in the reform process.

“We are determined to produce legislation that genuinely addresses the challenges confronting Nigerian retirees and aligns with best practices globally,” he said.

He added that the outcome of the discussions will guide the drafting of a revised law aimed at easing the burden on pensioners and improving overall administration in the sector.

The event signals another step in the 10th Assembly’s push to deliver on its legislative priorities between 2023 and 2027, with particular attention to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
