The incident reportedly occurred near Gbagi Market, where a team of police officers was said to be in pursuit of a Hilux vehicle suspected to be carrying internet fraud suspects.

During the chase, shots were fired, and one of the bullets reportedly hit the student, who was riding with his father.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, who is a final-year student was in the company of his twin brother en route to write the WAEC examination paper when tragedy struck.

They said he was immediately taken to Welfare Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.

The killing sparked outrage among residents and passersby, and in a powerful display of anger and grief, protesters have carried the student’s remains to the Oyo State Secretariat, seeking the intervention of Governor Seyi Makinde and demanding accountability for the incident.

As of press time, the state police command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

The atmosphere in the city remains tense, with calls growing louder for justice and reform in the handling
