In a determined move to address environmental concerns and public safety, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce launched a night-time enforcement operation on Wednesday, June 18, targeting criminal hideouts and illegal settlements on Lagos Island.
According to statements shared by the State’s Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources’ Political Head (Commissioner), Tokunbo Wahab, the operation began around 1 a.m. and covered several key locations including Maroko Sandfill, Bonny Camp, Victoria Island, and surrounding streets where suspicious activities had been previously reported.
During the sweep, 49 individuals including 48 men and one woman were said to be apprehended. The authorities said order was restored in the affected areas, and suspects are expected to face legal prosecution.
In a related development, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) intensified its clampdown on environmental offenders by sealing off several businesses across the Mainland on Tuesday, June 17, for repeated breaches of environmental standards, especially noise pollution.
The enforcement teams visited areas such as Aguda, Surulere, LASU-Iba Road, Ilogbo Road, Jakande, Ajangbadi, Ojo, Okokomaiko, and Agric Bus Stop. Businesses shut down during the operation included Admax Lounge, Casco Gas Plant, Food Affairs, Hotel De Bravo, JC Wellington Hotel & Suites, Niger Villa, Nayon Superstores, Another Level Hotel, The Levite Assembly, Lutana Lounge & Suites, and Kelwinson Hotel.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental laws and maintaining public order, urging residents and business owners to comply with regulations or risk similar sanctions.
