He highlighted the legislative milestones recorded during his administration, stressing the importance of consensus, cooperation, and dialogue in driving the business of lawmaking. Dewan, who represents Pankshin North, also addressed the citizens of Plateau State, expressing gratitude for their trust and support. He pledged to continue playing a positive role in the affairs of the state even after his exit from the Speakership.
The letter read “Today, I stand before you with a heart full of gratitude, deep reflection, and sincere appreciation as I formally tender my resignation as Speaker of this Honourable House.
“First and foremost, I want to thank every one of you – my colleagues in this Assembly – for the confidence you reposed in me by electing me to serve in this high office. Your support, guidance, and partnership throughout my tenure have been invaluable. Together, we navigated through moments of challenge and triumph, all in service of our great state and its people.
“I am proud of what we were able to achieve as a House. Through dialogue, debate, and consensus-building, we passed motions and laws that, I believe, will positively shape the lives of Plateau citizens for years to come. The spirit of cooperation that characterized our engagements, even in times of strong disagreement, is a testament to the strength of our democracy.
“I would also like to extend my profound gratitude to His Excellency, the Governor of Plateau State. I enjoyed a cordial and productive working relationship with him throughout my time as Speaker. Together, the executive and legislative arms were able to work in synergy to deliver on the mandate given to us by the people. The Governor’s openness to dialogue and mutual respect for the independence of this House contributed immensely to our collective achievements.
“To the management and staff of the State Assembly I lack words to appreciate you, without your support we wouldn’t have enable to get here.
“And to the people of Plateau State, I say thank you for your trust and for giving me the rare privilege to serve in this capacity. I leave this office with no regrets, knowing that I gave my best in the service of our state.
“As I step aside, I do so with faith that the Assembly will continue to uphold the principles of fairness, justice, and democratic governance. I remain committed to the progress of Plateau State and will continue to support any cause that promotes peace, unity, and development.
“As a human, I might have fallen short of some expectations, and I might have equally crossed some people’s part, I want to be deeply sorry where I have done wrong, as it is only human to err.
“Thank you all once again, and may God bless Plateau State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
His resignation comes amid ongoing discussions about leadership restructuring within the House, though no immediate successor has been announced.
The Assembly is expected to convene in the coming days to begin the process of electing a new Speaker.
