The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to a peaceful protest staged at the Lagos State House of Assembly over the composition of local government cabinets across the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, acknowledged the demonstrators’ right to express grievances, noting that peaceful protest remains a hallmark of democratic engagement.
“We wish to recognize, acknowledge and respect the rights of party stakeholders and members to express grievances in a democratic manner,” Oladejo said. “Peaceful protests are a legitimate feature of civic engagement, and we commend those who have conducted themselves calmly and orderly.”
Oladejo reaffirmed the party’s commitment to following established procedures and internal guidelines in selecting cabinet members for the 20 Local Government Councils and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
He clarified that while the state party plays a guiding role, nominations originate from local party leadership after consultations.
“The selection of cabinet members… will follow the laid down rules and the internal party guidelines and the proposition by local leadership of the party after due consultations,” he said. “Please note that the party at the state level only plays an advisory role.”
Rejecting claims of imposition, the party emphasized that nomination authority lies with local structures. “The party hereby vehemently denies any allegation to impose nomination on any local government. We want to advise interested members to approach their local leadership, who are the custodians of the powers to nominate,” Oladejo stated.
He urged aggrieved members to use official channels, stressing the importance of constructive dialogue and internal mechanisms for conflict resolution.
“We appeal for constructive participation and plead with the protesters to channel their concerns through official party organs,” he said. “Our structures exist precisely to address dissent, evaluate claims, and foster unity.”
Reiterating the party’s confidence in resolving internal matters without outside interference, Oladejo said the APC’s focus remains on maintaining unity and stability both within the party and in governance.
“We trust our leadership at various levels to follow the guidelines and endeavor to be fair to all and sundry,” he added. “We urge patience and understanding on the part of the protesters to achieve the desired objectives.”
