Abuja — President of the Giant of Africa (Nigeria), Bola Tinubu, has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare services for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing the move as essential to upholding their dignity in retirement.

The President also ordered the urgent implementation of long-delayed pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee for vulnerable retirees under the scheme.

These decisions followed a briefing at the State House by the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran.

Tinubu, during the meeting, also instructed PenCom to resolve the persistent issue surrounding the pension scheme for police personnel, noting that officers who dedicate their lives to national service must retire in peace and without uncertainty.

“Those who serve and protect the nation must not be left behind when their years of active service end,” the President said.

The PenCom DG updated the President on current efforts to maintain the real value of pension fund assets amid inflation and broader economic challenges. She also outlined plans to introduce a platform for Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute in foreign currency, thereby expanding the scope of the CPS.

Tinubu welcomed the brief and expressed full support for the ongoing pension reforms aimed at expanding coverage and improving retiree welfare.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to safeguard the interests of ordinary Nigerians and ensure that every citizen who labours for the country has a secure and dignified retirement.
