Barely 24 hours after unveiling projects across communities in Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Badagry, Lagos State, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Peter Ajose, on Thursay, flagged off a free medical outreach as activities marking his first 100 days in office continued.
Our correspondent, who monitored the event, reports that the outreach was organised by the council in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and targeted at elderly persons and other vulnerable residents across communities in the LCDA.
The programme provides access to free healthcare services through the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) under the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme. Under the arrangement, 500 beneficiaries have been enrolled to enjoy healthcare services for a period of 12 months at no cost.
Speaking at the flag-off, Hon. Ajose said the initiative was driven by the importance of good health to community development and the need to reduce the financial burden of medical care on residents. He assured beneficiaries that all arrangements had been concluded to guarantee uninterrupted access to services throughout the coverage period.
The chairman also used the occasion to encourage residents to take civic responsibility seriously, urging those yet to register as voters to do so, while calling on others to mobilise eligible members of their communities ahead of the next phase of voter registration expected to commence in January 2026.
The Medical Officer of Health, Health Department, Olorunda LCDA, Dr. Agosu Adewale Mautin, explained that the outreach combined health insurance enrolment with immediate medical screening. He said the council chairman personally covered the insurance costs for the beneficiaries, most of whom are residents unable to afford regular medical care.
According to him, participants underwent basic health checks, including blood sugar tests, eye screening for corrective lenses, prostate screening and other routine examinations, all aimed at early detection and prevention of health complications. He noted that beneficiaries who misplaced their Ilera Eko cards would be assisted in retrieving them.
Under the Ilera Eko scheme, enrollees can access care at approved public and private health facilities, including Badagry General Hospital, Adebayo Living Tower Hospital in Imeke, Ajara Medical Centre, Christ Foundation Hospital on Badagry Express Road, Care Givers Hospital in Isalu, Ibijola Medical Centre and Maternity Home, Marina Primary Healthcare Centre, Ajara Primary Healthcare Centre in Iluda Mango, Ajido Primary Healthcare Centre in Ebute Olofin, Ilado Primary Healthcare Centre in Ilado Town and Pota Primary Healthcare Centre in Pota Ikoga.
Beneficiaries admitted for treatment under the scheme are also entitled to one free meal per day for the duration of their admission.
