The Federal Government has unveiled plans to deploy 200,000 teachers across federal government schools nationwide, in what Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa described as a decisive step toward raising standards in the classroom.
The minister also disclosed that the government will, from 2026, take over the payment of licence fees for public school teachers.
The disclosure was contained in a statement issued on February 23, 2026, by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, following a courtesy visit to the ministry by the Convener of the “Let There Be Teachers” Conference, Mr. Oluwaseyi Anifowose.
Speaking during the meeting, the minister described the initiative as “a bold effort to elevate the teaching profession,” reaffirming the administration’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He stressed that no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers.
The proposed mobilisation, which cuts across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, is expected to strengthen staffing levels in federal schools and widen access to qualified educators.
As part of the reform measures outlined, the ministry has introduced a zero-rated digital platform for continuous professional development and announced that the Federal Government will assume responsibility for licence fees payable to the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria for public school teachers beginning in 2026.
The 2026 conference, building on the 2025 Guinness World Record milestone, is positioned to shift focus from symbolic milestones to measurable improvements in learning outcomes nationwide.
