At a moment marked by rising concerns over banditry and terrorism, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday handed a clear mandate to the new police chief: restore order and win back public trust.

The charge was contained in a State House press release issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following the decoration of Olatunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Disu’s appointment follows the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun, with the Nigeria Police Council expected to meet next week for ratification, pending Senate confirmation.

Addressing the new police boss, the President said, “I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor.”

He described the appointment as coming at a critical time and urged the Acting IGP to rebuild public confidence in the force and work closely with other security agencies.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” Tinubu said.

The President tasked Disu with driving the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing faith in his discipline and operational background.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” he said.

Tinubu also paid tribute to the outgoing police chief, who attended the ceremony with his spouse.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” the President stated.

He urged Egbetokun to remain available to support his successor, adding, “You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy.”

The President called on security stakeholders to close ranks in safeguarding lives and property across the country.

Among dignitaries present were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, retired AIG Hakeem Odumosu, senior officials, and family members of the Acting IGP.
