The Government of the Pace Setter State (Oyo) has reaffirmed its stance on the enforcement of existing laws across the state, stressing that all residents must adhere strictly to the Rule of Law or face prosecution.
This declaration was made by Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi (Rtd.), Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), on Wednesday. The Authority, which was established by Governor Seyi Makinde in April 2024 and formally inaugurated in August of the same year, is mandated to implement several key regulations within the state.
Justice Aderemi emphasized that the body is empowered to ensure compliance with laws covering environmental protection, road traffic control, and the prohibition of open grazing and rearing of livestock. She stated that while these laws have long existed, the establishment of OYRLEA serves to strengthen their enforcement across the state.
“We are fully committed to ensuring Oyo State is orderly, safe and clean for all,” Justice Aderemi said. “We will not hesitate to apprehend individuals or groups found breaching any of these regulations. There will be no preferential treatment for anyone, regardless of background or association.”
In a clear message to herders, the retired judge ordered the immediate removal of livestock from all designated farm settlements. She clarified that these areas are strictly reserved for crop farming and not for grazing activities of any kind.
Commenting on concerns raised about appointments into boards tied to enforcement mechanisms, she explained that the prerogative to constitute such bodies rests solely with the state government. According to her, no individual or association has the authority to contest such decisions.
The Authority further disclosed that mobile courts and tribunals have been stationed across the state to swiftly handle cases of non-compliance. Offenders, upon arrest, will be prosecuted, and if convicted, may face imprisonment or be granted the option of paying fines.
Residents were urged to avoid running afoul of the law, as the government moves to ensure discipline and orderliness in the state.
