The Sokoto State Police Command has recorded another operational success in its sustained campaign against banditry, with the neutralisation of a suspected armed bandit and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle with ammunition.

This followed a foiled attack on Daraye Village in Wamako Local Government Area.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command.

The Command disclosed that the incident occurred at about 1:35 a.m. on July 4, 2026, when it received a distress call that a large number of heavily armed bandits had launched an attack on Daraye Village.

Following the report, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and other tactical teams were deployed to reinforce officers attached to the Wamako Divisional Police Headquarters.

The statement said the operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, overpowering the bandits and forcing them to abandon the operation and flee into the forest with gunshot wounds.

It added that a thorough search of the surrounding bushes led to the neutralisation of one suspected bandit, while security personnel recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and 28 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.

The Command stated that confidence-building patrols are ongoing across the affected area to reassure residents and prevent any fresh criminal activities.

It also revealed that neighbouring Divisional Police Headquarters have been placed on high alert and directed to watch for injured suspects who may seek medical attention within their jurisdictions.

Commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, said, “The Command has recorded significant operational breakthroughs against violent crimes, following the successful neutralization of a suspected armed bandit and the recovery of AK-47 in the aftermath of a foiled attack on Daraye Village, Wamako Local Government Area.”

He added, “The Command remains committed to eradicating banditry and ensuring the safety of lives and property within the State.”
