Lagos State schools will reopen on Monday, September 14, for the 2026/2027 academic session, with the government urging strict attention to safety and hygiene.
The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and signed by the Commissioner, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun.
The ministry welcomed pupils, students, teachers, school administrators, non-teaching staff and other stakeholders as public and private schools across the state prepare to resume academic activities.
The government said the new session should be marked by stronger attention to learning, discipline, character development and academic achievement.
It also reminded school communities that the safety, health and well-being of learners and staff should remain a collective responsibility.
Under its back-to-school advisory, the government urged pupils and students to keep classrooms, toilets, laboratories, playgrounds and other school facilities clean.
Learners were also advised to wash their hands regularly with soap and safe water, particularly before eating and after using the toilet, while avoiding littering and disposing of waste in designated bins.
The ministry cautioned students against sharing personal items, including drinking cups, cutlery and towels, which could aid the spread of infections.
It also called for good respiratory hygiene, including covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, as well as avoiding unnecessary overcrowding and maintaining proper ventilation in enclosed spaces.
The government directed pupils and students to promptly report damaged facilities, unsafe conditions and health concerns to teachers or school authorities.
Teachers, administrators and non-teaching staff were urged to lead by example by maintaining high standards of personal hygiene, cleanliness and safety within school premises.
Schools were also encouraged to ensure that water, sanitation and hygiene facilities remain functional and that classrooms and frequently touched surfaces are cleaned regularly.
The ministry called on parents, learners and education personnel to approach the new academic session with renewed commitment towards academic and personal success.
The Permanent Secretary, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, wished pupils, students, teachers, administrators and non-teaching staff a safe and successful 2026/2027 academic session.
