In a renewed push to tackle poverty and support grassroots enterprise, the Governor of the Centre of Excellence (Lagos) Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the empowerment of more than 1,700 residents through the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI).

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, focuses on providing practical skills, startup tools, and financial support to help residents, particularly women—build sustainable livelihoods.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that MESI was designed to help families unlock new sources of income by building on existing talents or developing new capabilities. He noted that the strategy is rooted in supporting the informal economy, which remains a critical driver of the state’s development.

“We’ve channeled nearly N10 billion into this program because we believe that the true engine of growth is the grassroots. This is about allowing everyday Lagosians the opportunity to improve their lives and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive society” he stated.

The governor urged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity, stressing that the equipment and funding provided should be seen as a launchpad, not a final destination.

“Grow your businesses, support your families, and in the process, help shape a Lagos that works for everyone,” he told the new recipients.

The MESI program forms part of the government’s broader agenda to reduce economic hardship and expand access to opportunities for residents across the state.
