The Nigeria Police Force has reintroduced the digital Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system nationwide, with a 30-day grace period beginning May 1, 2025.
This follows concerns over the misuse of tinted vehicles and rising complaints about the harassment of motorists by law enforcement officers.
A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the permit system has been restored on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, stating that the process will be handled through a centralized digital platform—possap.gov.ng—designed to simplify application and verification procedures.
The reactivation is aimed at addressing the security risks associated with tinted windows, which authorities say are often exploited for criminal purposes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and various forms of organized crime. By regulating the use of such vehicles, the police expect to improve visibility for surveillance operations and enhance public safety.
According to the statement, individuals seeking approval must complete their applications online. The process includes identity verification using the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric data capture, and background screening. Approved applicants will receive a digitally generated permit embedded with a QR code, with processing expected to be completed within 72 hours.
The Police Force has warned that enforcement will begin on June 1, 2025, at the expiration of the grace period. It also cautioned officers against any form of misconduct during implementation, stating that personnel found guilty of extortion or harassment will face disciplinary measures.
The Inspector-General urged Nigerians to cooperate with the policy, stressing that its success is critical to the broader goal of national security and public order.
