Akure, Ondo State – In a move seen as a practical step toward improving urban infrastructure in the Sunshine State (Ondo), Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa on Friday commissioned the newly reconstructed Gbangbalogun Axis Road in Akure.
The project, spanning seven kilometres, links Irowo Road with the Arakale–Oke-Aro–Idanre corridor, a critical route for both residential and commercial traffic in the state capital.
The event held opposite Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Isegun, drew attention not only for the scale of the roadworks but also for its timing within the Governor’s first 100 days in office.
Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the project as a targeted response to longstanding concerns about the state of urban roads in Akure.
“This road was in a terrible condition for years—cracked surfaces, potholes, and structural defects made it a daily struggle for motorists and pedestrians. Today, that story changes,” he said.
He explained that the reconstruction of the Gbangbalogun link was prioritized ahead of ongoing work on the major Oke-Aro–Idanre Road, to improve traffic circulation and prevent future congestion.
The Governor also acknowledged residents of the area for their patience during the construction period, noting that their cooperation was instrumental in the successful delivery of the project.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr. Olawoye Abiola disclosed that the Gbangbalogun road is among several others being executed across the state, many of which are at different stages of completion.
“These roads are not just access points, they are strategic links that open up communities and encourage commercial growth,” he said.
The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, who attended the event, praised the Governor’s swift response to infrastructural challenges within the city. The monarch said the road would significantly ease movement and support business activity.
“We’ve long needed attention on roads like this. It’s reassuring to see the state government taking action. You have our support,” the traditional ruler stated.
With the completion of the Gbangbalogun road, many residents say they are hopeful that the current administration will continue to prioritize projects that directly impact daily life, especially within densely populated areas of the state.
