Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the decision of his son, Abba Abubakar, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a personal choice that does not affect his own political convictions.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, made this known in a message released on Wednesday while responding to public reactions following his son’s defection to the ruling party.
“Atiku said, ‘The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect.
“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people.
“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress.”
Abba Abubakar had earlier announced his move to the APC, sparking wide political reactions due to his father’s long-standing opposition role. Atiku’s response draws a firm line between family political decisions and his continued efforts to challenge the ruling party and push for improved governance.
