ABUJA – Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to African unity and development as the continent marks Africa Day 2025, themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Government emphasized the importance of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, describing it as a guiding framework for advancing democratic values, good governance, youth inclusion, and regional stability.
Under President Bola Tinubu Federal Government, Nigeria pledged continued support for continental initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation, promoting intra-African trade, and strengthening responses to shared challenges such as climate impact and economic inequality. The country also reaffirmed its backing for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a driver of economic integration and self-reliance.
While acknowledging achievements across education, health, and public infrastructure, Nigeria called for a renewed collective effort to address persistent issues including poverty, armed conflict, and structural inequality. The Ministry urged African nations to deepen collaboration and build stronger alliances with global partners to ensure Africa’s voice is more influential in international affairs.
The country further highlighted the resilience and creativity of Africa’s population, particularly its youth as key to shaping a more secure and prosperous future.
Africa Day, an annual celebration on May 25th, commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and serves as a moment to reflect on the continent’s shared history, values, and future direction.
