The Federal Government is preparing to put up for sale a housing estate comprising 753 units, recovered from former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The estate which is located in Abuja, was on Tuesday officially transferred to the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during a handover event at the ministry’s Mabushi headquarters.
In a statement issued by the ministry’s Press and Public Relations department, the receipt of the estate was confirmed, marking a new phase in the government’s asset recovery drive.
Political head (Minister) of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Dangiwa, applauded the EFCC’s role in reclaiming the property, which is part of ongoing legal proceedings involving Emefiele.
According to the minister, a joint inspection will soon be conducted by both the ministry and EFCC officials to evaluate the state of the buildings and ensure all structures meet safety standards with structural assessments to precede any move to allocate or sell the units.
“The government plans to make the housing units available to the general public, as well as for designated official use. The sales process will be open and competitive. Interested buyers will be required to submit applications through the Renewed Hope Portal following a national public notice,” the ministry stated.
EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, described the handover as a demonstration of the government’s resolve to ensure assets seized from corruption cases are repurposed for the public good. He stressed that properties acquired through illicit means must be redirected transparently to prevent further abuse.
Emefiele, who served as the CBN governor under two administrations, is currently facing a series of charges related to alleged financial misconduct. The Abuja estate represents one of several assets linked to the investigations.
