The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed as fake reports suggesting that a timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election have been released.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the electoral body described the circulating information as false and misleading, stressing that no such document has been approved or made public by the commission.

“INEC wishes to categorically refute reports circulating in some quarters claiming that the Commission has released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election,” the statement said. “The Commission wishes to state clearly that this information is false and misleading. INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election.”

The commission explained that its actions are guided strictly by the law, drawing attention to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which stipulates that a notice of election must be published not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.

It added that any timetable issued outside this legal window cannot originate from INEC.

“Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC,” the commission stated.

INEC assured Nigerians that an official timetable for the 2027 polls would be unveiled at the appropriate time and in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022. It noted that once released, the document would be shared through its recognised and verified communication channels.

The commission also called on members of the public and the media to ignore the fake reports and rely only on its official platforms for accurate information.
