The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised a concern over the low number of media applications received so far for accreditation to cover the forthcoming bye-elections slated for Saturday, 16th August 2025.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, 23rd July 2025, by the Commission’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, only 12 applications covering 91 individuals had been submitted as of 3:00 p.m.
INEC had launched its media accreditation portal on Tuesday, 8th July 2025, to enable journalists and media organisations—print, broadcast, and online—to register for coverage of the elections. The Commission expressed disappointment with the response received so far.
“This turnout, so far, is far below expectations,” the Commission stated, urging interested media outlets to take advantage of the remaining period to apply through the official portal: https://imap.inecnigeria.org.
The electoral body disclosed that the portal will remain open until 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, 31st July 2025, after which it will be closed. INEC stressed that late applications would not be accepted under any condition.
The Commission also underscored the essential role of journalists in the electoral process, describing election coverage as a professional responsibility that promotes transparency and strengthens democratic values.
“The Commission reiterates the vital role of the media in ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process. Election coverage is a professional duty that contributes significantly to democratic consolidation,” the statement read.
Media organisations and practitioners seeking further clarification are advised to contact INEC via 07088844564 or 08032861058.
Mrs. Eta-Messi called on all stakeholders in the media to support the Commission’s efforts by providing timely, accurate, and balanced reports throughout the electoral process.
