The Centre of Excellence (Lagos) Government has confirmed the arrest of a man accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area.
In a statement issued Thursday through its official X platform (formerly Twitter), the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) revealed that the suspect is currently being held at Ayobo Police Station while investigations continue.
The case, which has drawn widespread condemnation from the public, has been handed over to the Gender Desk Unit of the Nigeria Police Force for deeper inquiry. The DSVA said it is collaborating with law enforcement authorities to ensure due process is followed and justice delivered.
Officials noted that the state government has established direct communication with the survivor’s family, providing both medical assistance and psychosocial care.
The young girl has been referred to the Ipaja Family Support Unit and relevant care services for psychological support and counseling, with health professionals already attending to her medical needs.
The agency commended community members who brought the matter to the attention of authorities, stressing the need for continued public awareness and community action to address cases of abuse.
Restating its firm position on sexual offences, the Lagos State Government assured residents that it will pursue the matter rigorously and ensure that the suspect is prosecuted by the law.
