The Pace Setter State (Oyo) Government has dismissed a viral social media post claiming it plans to impose levies on social functions such as weddings, naming ceremonies, and burials.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government described the post as “fake and malicious,” saying it was designed to mislead the public and discredit the administration.
Oyelade explained that any official document relating to taxes or levies in the state must contain a Revenue Code for payment and bear the signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Board. “None of these conditions have been fulfilled in the viral post,” he said.
He further noted that an authentic communication of such nature must carry the address “Oyo State Internal Revenue Office,” which was clearly missing from the fabricated document.
The Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant as the next elections approach, warning that political actors may resort to misinformation to undermine Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
He also cautioned bloggers and online platforms against publishing unverified information. “Always verify your stories before putting them in the public domain,” Oyelade advised.
