The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, blaming it for worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and the erosion of democratic structures in the country.
This position was made public in a communiqué issued after the party’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 27.
The committee expressed deep worry over what it described as the deteriorating state of the nation under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government. It highlighted the rise in killings, banditry, abductions, and attacks on communities as evidence of the government’s failure to protect lives and property.
NEC also pointed to growing hardship among Nigerians, attributing it to the fuel subsidy removal, rising electricity tariffs, multiple taxes, and other policies it claims have brought immense suffering, forced businesses to shut down, and thrown millions into joblessness.
In its assessment, the committee accused the Tinubu government of financial mismanagement, alleging large-scale corruption, budget padding, diversion of public funds, and a lack of policy direction, all of which it said have discouraged investment and stalled development.
The PDP NEC urged the president to immediately reverse what it described as “anti-people policies” and take urgent steps to address the country’s security and economic challenges.
On the political front, the PDP warned against what it sees as a creeping attempt to stifle democracy by weakening opposition voices. The party claimed the APC is pursuing a dangerous path toward one-party rule through threats, intimidation, and misuse of power.
Reaffirming its own commitment to democratic principles and multiparty politics, the PDP said the unity shown at the NEC meeting is proof of its readiness to stand as a credible alternative to the APC.
As part of preparations for the 2025 National Convention, the NEC ratified the membership of key planning committees. The Convention Committee will be chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, with Governors Ademola Adeleke and Peter Mbah serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary, respectively. Governor Douye Diri will head the Zoning Committee, supported by Governors Dauda Lawal and Caleb Mutfwang.
The party also received a resolution from its South East Zonal Executive concerning the position of National Secretary and resolved to address the matter at its next NEC meeting scheduled for June 30.
In closing, Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagum reassured Nigerians that the PDP remains a united front, committed to reclaiming leadership and steering the country away from its current woes.
