The House Committee is holding a public hearing on eleven new bills, each proposing the creation of specialized colleges and universities focused on farming, fisheries, forestry, and rural enterprise.

These bills aim to spread such institutions across states like the Gateway State (Ogun), Pacesetter State (Oyo), Glory of All Lands State (Bayelsa),  The People’s Paradise State (Cross River), Centre of Commerce State (Kano), and Treasure Base of the Nation (Rivers), to bring agricultural education closer to the communities.

The Committee Chairman, Isiaq Abiodun said it is more than just another legislative session.

“This is about making sure the right structures are in place to support food production, skills training, and better opportunities for young people in agriculture,” he said ahead of the hearing.

The House Committee noted that the event is open to experts in the education sector, agricultural practitioners, civil society groups, and Nigerians who believe their voices matter in decisions that affect food systems, learning, and life in rural areas.

The hearing is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 19, at the Conference Room 023, in the New Building of the House of Representatives, Abuja.

The Bills opened for public hearing include: A proposal to establish a Federal College of Land Resources Technology in Sokoto, A plan for a College of Agriculture and Forestry in Cross River, a bill to create a National Institute for Agricultural Research and Entrepreneurship in Ogun State,  proposal for a College of Agriculture in Oyo and another in Edo, establishment of a research institute for Fisheries and Aquatic Studies in Kano, Institute that will focus on bamboo research and entrepreneurship in Rivers, College of Agriculture and Vocational Studies in Bayelsa, two universities—one for Agriculture, Forestry, and Technology in Igbo-Ora, and another in Akure and a proposal for Colleges of Fisheries and Apiculture in yet-to-be-named locations.

Each one of these ideas is targeted at promoting education, creating employment, and empowering the communities.
