The State Government of the Land of Honour and Integrity (Ekiti) has issued a two-week notice to street traders operating at Bisi Market, Kings Market, and other key locations in Ado-Ekiti to vacate unauthorized roadside spaces and relocate to the newly completed Agric Olope Market.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji gave the directive during a meeting with market women held at the palace of the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, warning that defaulters would face legal consequences after the June 23 deadline.

The Governor underscored the need to maintain order and protect public health in the state capital, stressing that unregulated street trading endangers both traders and pedestrians.

He noted that the Agric Olope Market was built in response to traders’ demands and is equipped with facilities including potable water, modern sanitation systems, internal road networks, lighting for evening trade, warehouses, and security arrangements.

“Today’s meeting is just to consult with market women, we just completed an ultra-modern market for them and we want them to move to the market and this speaks to our belief in consultation rather than using force to move them. I discussed with Ewi and the Ewi in council and we agreed to bring the market women to the palace so that we can have an agreement,” the Governor said

Speaking on enforcement, the Governor warned that while the majority had agreed to relocate peacefully, those who disregarded the directive would be sanctioned.

In her reaction, the Political Head (Commissioner) of the State’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, Tayo Adeola, urged traders to begin applying for shop allocations starting next Tuesday, with the assurance of an open and fair process.

The meeting was attended by the Ekiti State senior government officials.
