ABUJA – The Green Chamber (HoR) has approved, on third reading, a bill seeking the establishment of the Federal University of Technology in Badagry, the Centre of Excellence (Lagos State).

The proposed legislation, which now moves to the Senate for concurrence, is aimed at improving access to higher education in Lagos and easing the pressure on existing tertiary institutions. It is the result of collaborative efforts by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, who represents Badagry Federal Constituency and serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), and Rt. Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, Member for Ikeja Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Finance.

The bill was formally introduced for third reading on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere, during plenary on May 6, 2025.

While addressing lawmakers earlier during committee considerations in March, Hon. Faleke emphasized the urgent need for a technical university in the Badagry axis. He pointed to the growing number of Nigerian youths—especially from the South-West—who are compelled to seek admission in foreign institutions due to limited local options.

“This university is a strategic response to the educational gaps that force many of our brightest minds to look beyond our borders. Lagos has long deserved an additional federal institution with a strong focus on science and technology,” he stated.

Hon. Whingan, whose consistent lobbying played a central role in the bill’s progression, thanked his colleagues for their support and described the House’s action as a significant milestone for residents of Badagry and the wider Lagos area.

“With this development, we are closer than ever to realizing a long-standing aspiration for our people. This is about ensuring that the next generation of Nigerians can study, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society from right here at home” he said.

Should the bill receive Senate approval and presidential assent, the university is expected to bring far-reaching changes to the educational and economic fabric of the Badagry region.
