President Bola Tinubu has extended his warm congratulations to two British Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, following their recent inauguration as mayors in the United Kingdom.
This was conveyed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who described their achievements as a source of pride for Nigeria and a motivation to young people across the world, particularly within the Nigerian community.
Opeyemi Bright, aged 29, now holds the position of Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, becoming the youngest individual to assume that office in the borough’s history. She began her public service journey at just 22 when she was elected as Barking and Dagenham’s youngest Labour councilor in 2018.
In a parallel stride, Jason Jackson made history as the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough’s establishment in 1900. His emergence comes after a swift rise through the ranks of local governance, having been elected councilor in 2022 and later appointed Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee in 2023.
President Tinubu applauded both mayors for their commitment to community service and their representation of core values such as honesty, diligence, and service to humanity, urging them to remain dedicated in their new roles and expressed confidence in their ability to leave a positive imprint in their respective constituencies.
On behalf of the Federal Government, Tinubu reaffirmed his belief that their leadership would inspire a generation of Nigerians both within the country and abroad to embrace civic responsibility and public service.
