GOMBE — Jewel of the Savannah (Gombe State) Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has thrown his full support behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anticipated 2027 re-election bid, following the Federal Government’s release of ₦60 billion for the establishment of a large-scale agro-livestock industrial zone in the state.
The fund, which forms part of a ₦120 billion commitment from President Bola Tinubu’s administration, is expected to drive the development of an 184-hectare livestock and agricultural complex, designed to bolster the economy and generate employment.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Gombe (Jewel of the Savannah) on Saturday, Governor Yahaya said the facility is expected to reshape the livestock sector in the state and beyond, with components including a modern abattoir, international livestock market, fattening centres, tannery, leather processing plant, feed mills, and an inland dry port.
“Each facility is designed with cutting-edge infrastructure to enable safe, efficient, and large-scale processing and commerce. This automated facility will enable hygienic, efficient, and globally compliant processing, packaging, and distribution, serving domestic and international markets
“The Gombe Ultramodern Abattoir is set to transform meat processing in Gombe State and the entire Northern region of Nigeria,” the Governor said.
He emphasized the project’s potential to reduce reliance on live animal transport—a practice long criticized for inefficiency and health risks. “This development moves us toward safer, smarter, and more productive livestock commerce,” Yahaya added.
The initiative, he said, aligns with broader goals of import reduction, job creation, and strengthening foreign exchange earnings through value addition across the livestock production chain.
Also present at the event was the Political Head (Minister) of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha, who reaffirmed Abuja’s resolve to reposition the livestock economy. He noted that the project fits within the administration’s broader development framework, aiming to raise animal processing capacity to meet both domestic demand and international standards.
Minister Maiha disclosed that upon completion, the facility is expected to process up to 500 cattle, 1,000 small ruminants, and 3,000 poultry birds per day.
