The Lagos State Government has formalized a new partnership with ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, in a strategic move to restructure the state’s waste disposal system.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who witnessed the signing of the agreement on Monday, said the initiative is a crucial response to the state’s daily waste generation, which currently stands at approximately 13,000 tonnes.

A key element of the project is the development of a Transfer Loading Station at the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota, which will facilitate the complete closure of the long-standing landfill. Once in operation, the station will enable the transfer of 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility to be constructed in Ikorodu.

In a similar approach, the Solous III site in Igando will also undergo reconfiguration. About 1,500 tonnes of waste currently disposed of there will be redirected to another recovery facility planned for Badagry.

The project also includes the deployment of self-tipping tricycles to support waste collection in hard-to-reach areas across the city and its outskirts. This component is designed to address waste evacuation challenges in neighborhoods with limited access to conventional vehicles.

The initiative is expected to generate over 5,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, covering a range of roles from facility operation to logistics and community-level waste collection.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the development as part of broader efforts to improve public health and ensure a cleaner urban environment. He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to address longstanding waste management challenges and to enhance the living conditions of residents.

The agreement with ZoomLion marks a major intervention in the state’s push for a more structured and sustainable approach to urban sanitation.

“This project will improve how we handle waste and is expected to create over 5,000 jobs directly and indirectly.

We are taking steps in the right direction, towards cleaner streets, better health, and a more livable Lagos for all of us,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.
