President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

Describing Buhari as a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria, President Tinubu noted that the late leader’s record in both military and civilian leadership would be remembered for generations. Buhari served as Head of State between 1984 and 1985, and later returned as an elected President from 2015 to 2023.

President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, their children, and the entire Buhari family. He also reached out to the people of Katsina State, especially Daura Emirate, Buhari’s hometown.

“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” President Tinubu said.

In Buhari’s honour, Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days beginning Sunday. An emergency session of the Federal Executive Council will be held on Tuesday in tribute to the former leader, and preparations are underway for a state burial.

“The Federal Government will accord  President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” he stated.
