President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for booking a place in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship for the fifth straight time.
The Nigerian side secured a 75-68 victory over Senegal in a closely contested semifinal at the Palais De la Sport in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. It marked their seventh win over their West African rivals in a fierce basketball rivalry.
President Tinubu described the triumph as a proud moment for the country, applauding the team’s discipline and unity throughout the competition.
“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament—qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” the President said.
The win also guarantees D’Tigress a place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying series scheduled for March next year.
The President gave special recognition to Head Coach Rena Wakama, Nigeria’s first female handler of the team, for her leadership role and continued impact on the squad.
“I especially commend Rena Wakama, the team’s first female Head Coach, whose leadership and experience—both on the court and now from the bench—continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,” he stated.
Tinubu pledged his full support as the team aims for a fifth AfroBasket title in a row and their seventh overall.
