The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting that a new fabric has been selected for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform.

The clarification was made by the Office of the Minister for Youth Development, following comments made by the Minister during an interview on Channels Television on the ongoing reforms of the NYSC.

The ministry explained that the Minister mentioned Adire and Ankara only as examples of proposals submitted during consultations and not as fabrics approved for the corps members’ uniform.

It stated that, “During the interview, the Honourable Minister referenced Adire and Ankara only as examples of proposals received during the consultation process. These references should not be interpreted as confirmation that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved for the NYSC uniform.”

The ministry stressed that discussions on the reform are still in progress, with no final choice made on either the fabric or the design of the proposed uniform.

It said the review process is weighing different options based on factors such as professional outlook, national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness and the promotion of national pride.

The statement read, “No final decision has been made on the fabric or design. The ongoing reform process is considering various options based on key considerations, including professional outlook, national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the promotion of national pride.”

The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to a broad consultation process, noting that every decision would reflect the views of stakeholders and the country’s overall interest.

It said, “The Ministry remains committed to an inclusive, consultative, and evidence-based reform process. Any eventual decision will be guided by broad stakeholder engagement and what best serves the interests of the nation.”

The ministry urged Nigerians to pay attention to the wider goals of the NYSC reforms, which include improving youth employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national unity, improving service delivery and preparing the scheme to meet the changing needs of young Nigerians.

It added, “We encourage Nigerians to remain focused on the broader objectives of the NYSC reforms, which are aimed at improving youth employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and positioning the Scheme to better meet the needs of today’s young people and the country’s development aspirations.”

The ministry thanked Nigerians for their interest in the reform process and expressed appreciation for the public’s support and feedback as work continues on the review of the NYSC.
