The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is considering the deployment of available biometric equipment to JAMB to strengthen examination verification.
The move followed a request by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, during a visit to INEC headquarters in Abuja on Friday, September 4, 2026.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, who led the Board’s management team to the Commission, said the agency approached INEC because of its experience in using biometric technology to identify and verify large numbers of Nigerians.
Aina said JAMB was seeking to further strengthen the integrity of its examination processes, adding that the Board had learnt that some biometric verification equipment belonging to INEC might no longer be in active use.
He appealed to the Commission to consider making some of the equipment available to JAMB to support its biometric verification efforts.
Receiving the delegation, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, welcomed the request and directed the Commission’s Director of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Lawrence Bayode, to review it.
Amupitan ordered a proof-of-concept assessment to establish the availability, technical condition and suitability of any biometric equipment that could potentially be deployed to JAMB.
The INEC Chairman pointed to the Commission’s recent technological deployments during the Anambra and Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections and bye-elections conducted across the country.
He said the use of technology in those elections had attracted commendations from stakeholders, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the United Kingdom High Commission, particularly on the credibility and peaceful conduct of the polls.
Amupitan said the engagement between both agencies reflected the importance of government bodies drawing on their respective expertise and resources to advance national development.
He assured the delegation that INEC remained willing to explore further areas of cooperation that could strengthen the capacity of both agencies to deliver on their respective mandates.
Aina thanked the INEC chairman and management for the reception, reaffirming JAMB’s interest in strengthening collaboration with the Commission.
