Abuja —Nigeria has congratulated South Africa on the celebration of its 31st Freedom Day anniversary, reaffirming the strong ties and shared history between both nations.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed warm greetings to South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, applauding the country’s remarkable journey from apartheid to democracy. He praised the enduring spirit of resilience and unity that has defined South Africa’s national identity over the decades.
Reflecting on this milestone, Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the deep connection between Nigeria and South Africa, recalling Nigeria’s steadfast support for the anti-apartheid movement through diplomatic engagements, material aid, and moral solidarity. This shared struggle, he noted, continues to serve as a foundation for their enduring friendship and the broader pursuit of pan-African ideals.
With both nations ranking among Africa’s leading economies and democracies, Ambassador Tuggar highlighted their collective role in promoting peace, security, and inclusive growth across the continent. He stressed Nigeria’s commitment to expanding cooperation with South Africa across various fields, from trade and investment under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to cultural and youth development initiatives.
On the occasion of Freedom Day, Nigeria paid tribute to South African icons such as Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, and Thabo Mbeki, whose sacrifices laid the groundwork for a free and united nation. Ambassador Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to working alongside South Africa in building a prosperous and harmonious Africa.
The message was formally issued by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on Sunday.
