Ado-Ekiti – Labour leaders in the Land of Honour and Integrity (Ekiti State) have applauded the state government’s strides in improving workers’ welfare, while also urging sustained commitment to the rights and freedoms of workers across Nigeria.

Speaking during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Kolapo Olatunde, and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart and National President of ASUSS, Comrade Sola Adigun, commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for prompt payment of salaries and arrears, access to loans, and the provision of subsidized transportation for workers.

The labour leaders described these interventions as meaningful steps that have eased the financial burden on civil servants and improved morale. However, they emphasized the need for all tiers of government to uphold the rights of workers and protect the autonomy of labour unions, warning that democracy cannot thrive under conditions of hardship and suppression.

They called for an enabling environment where collective bargaining, safe working conditions, and fair treatment are guaranteed as fundamental components of governance.

In his address, Governor Biodun Oyebanji praised the dedication and resilience of Ekiti workers, acknowledging them as critical to the state’s development and stability. He lauded their commitment to public service and reaffirmed his administration’s priority on labour welfare.

The Governor highlighted ongoing reforms and support initiatives, including the recruitment of 1,500 primary school teachers, 930 secondary school subject teachers, and 48 education officers. He also mentioned the disbursement of over N400 million in housing and car loans to more than 1,400 teaching and non-teaching staff, alongside the implementation of the new minimum wage and the elevation of primary school teachers to grade level 16.

“These efforts are part of a broader push to reposition the public service as a driver of sustainable growth.

“We believe in engaging constructively with labour, and this is a period where collaboration and genuine dialogue are essential in navigating national economic challenges” Oyebanji stated.

He assured labour leaders of his administration’s readiness for continued engagement and encouraged them to present practical ideas that would enhance economic development and promote the welfare of citizens.

Also speaking, the Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, applauded the Governor’s consistent partnership with labour leaders and emphasized the need for greater civic participation from the workforce. She noted that the increased minimum wage has significantly supported workers’ access to basic needs.
