The Senate has resolved to deepen its engagement with the Presidency as part of renewed efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio set to lead a delegation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for discussions on the country’s security situation.
The resolution was disclosed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio following the Senate’s deliberations on the state of security across the country and measures aimed at strengthening the nation’s response to criminal activities.
Akpabio said the Senate had adopted resolutions designed to improve Nigeria’s response to insecurity, pursue those responsible for violent crimes, and strengthen legislative oversight of the country’s security architecture.
“As part of these resolutions, the Senate also agreed that I should lead a delegation to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss the nation’s security challenges and support ongoing efforts to restore peace across the country,” he said.
The Senate President stressed that protecting Nigerians must remain a shared national responsibility, saying, “The security of our nation and the protection of every Nigerian remain fundamental responsibilities of government.”
He added that, “The safety of our citizens, our communities, and those who have dedicated their lives to defending Nigeria must remain at the centre of our national priorities.”
Akpabio also reaffirmed the commitment of the Senate to backing policies that would strengthen security agencies, safeguard lives and property, and promote lasting peace.
He maintained that, “A secure Nigeria remains the foundation upon which sustainable development, economic prosperity, and national progress can be built.”
