Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the Land of Honour and Integrity (Ekiti State) has received a significant boost in his re-election campaign as members of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) in the state pledged their full support for a second term.
The pensioners, during a gathering held at the NUP Secretariat in Ado Ekiti, praised the governor’s track record in promoting their welfare and delivering on promises.
Represented by his deputy, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, Governor Oyebanji was lauded for policies that have improved the living standards of retired public servants in the state.
Speaking at the event, the NUP State Chairman, Comrade Tope Popoola, described the governor’s tenure as a period of relief for pensioners. He noted that Oyebanji was the first to appoint a Special Adviser dedicated to pension matters—an initiative that has since become a model in the country.
Popoola, backed by loud affirmation from union members, said the administration’s consistent payment of pensions, phased settlement of accumulated gratuities, and the disbursement of a N10,000 support fund were clear indicators of the governor’s sincerity.
“Our members have resolved to stand by Governor Oyebanji. He has shown genuine concern for our needs, including personal contributions such as N15 million towards our guest house project. This is a gesture we cannot overlook” Popoola stated.
Also speaking, NUP National Vice President, Comrade Ayo Kumapayi, recalled a time when pensioners in Ekiti faced severe hardship. He said the current administration had changed that narrative by restoring their dignity and giving them the means to participate in daily economic life.
“Today, our members can meet their needs without shame. That shift is a result of consistent care and attention,” Kumapayi added.
In his response, Governor Oyebanji expressed appreciation for the endorsement, describing it as motivation to continue the development agenda his administration has pursued. He emphasized that the contributions of senior citizens to the growth of Ekiti State would never be overlooked.
“We recognize the sacrifices you made during your years in service. Your welfare remains central to our plans. Regular payments and access to medical care are part of our responsibility, and we will stay the course,” Oyebanji said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to building a society where every segment of the population, including the elderly, feels acknowledged and supported.
