The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, said the declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The ministry said June 12 holds a special place in Nigeria’s democratic journey, recognising the courage, resilience and sacrifices of citizens whose contributions helped shape the country’s democratic governance.
The statement noted that the government remains committed to protecting democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
It added that the Ministry of Interior, working with relevant security agencies, would continue measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property nationwide.
The minister described security as a key requirement for sustaining democracy and advancing national development, while urging Nigerians to use the holiday as a period for reflection and renewed commitment to responsible citizenship.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” Tunji-Ojo said.
