The Federal Government has suspended the proposed review of registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination and the National Examinations Council Senior School Certificate Examination.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced the decision in a statement issued on Monday, saying the letter dated June 18, 2026, conveying the proposed adjustment had been withdrawn to allow for a fresh review and wider consultations with all relevant stakeholders before any final decision.
The Ministry said it took note of the concerns raised by Nigerians and welcomed the public interest shown in issues affecting access to quality education.
It explained that the proposal followed rising expenses associated with conducting national examinations, while registration fees had remained almost unchanged for several years despite higher costs of logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment, quality assurance and other services required to preserve the credibility of public examinations.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal should be suspended, saying it would remain on hold in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to “inclusive, transparent and evidence-based policymaking.”
The Ministry said the review process would involve examination bodies, State Ministries of Education, school proprietors and administrators, parents’ associations, organised labour, education stakeholders and other key partners before any decision is reached.
It also stated that the proposed review of examination registration fees “will not take effect, as earlier communicated, pending the conclusion of the consultation process.”
The Ministry reaffirmed that the welfare of students, equal access to quality education and responsible policy decisions remain central to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the education sector.
It appreciated the understanding, patience and continued support of stakeholders, assuring Nigerians that the public would be kept informed throughout the consultation process.
