The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police across the country to begin an immediate and detailed audit of arms and ammunition in their commands and formations.
The directive was issued during an emergency conference with Commissioners of Police and journalists at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Disu said the audit is aimed at strengthening accountability, identifying operational gaps, preventing misuse of police assets, and improving the operational readiness of the Force.
He stressed that the exercise goes beyond routine administrative work, describing it as a critical measure to ensure that all weapons and ammunition under police custody are properly documented, secured, and deployed in line with operational standards and national security objectives.
The IGP directed Commissioners of Police to carry out the exercise with diligence, ensure openness in the process, and produce detailed reports for submission to the Force Headquarters within the given timeline.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to reforms built on accountability, professionalism, transparency, and strong internal control systems.
The police also assured Nigerians that ongoing reforms under the current leadership are focused on building a disciplined and accountable organisation capable of responding to present-day security challenges.
