The Centre of Commerce (Kano) Government has recovered the sum of ₦27,824,395.40 fraudulently paid to 247 retired and deceased workers listed in the March 2025 payroll of local government councils.

The irregular payments were uncovered during a payroll validation exercise carried out by the Pay Parade Committee, initiated to sanitize the state’s salary system.

Musa Tanko Muhammad, Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in the state.

According to the statement, the committee directed Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and Local Government Councils to review printed salary vouchers for March, ahead of a comprehensive pay parade scheduled to commence on April 28.

The review exposed payments to individuals who had either exited service or died, yet continued to draw monthly wages. The government has since retrieved the full amount and returned it to the Local Government Treasury.

Muhammad said further investigations are underway to determine how the fraud was sustained and to identify all those involved.

“The government remains committed to holding those responsible fully accountable under the law,” the statement added.
