State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Centre of Excellence has described President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to constitutional rule as “tested, proven, and unquestionable.”
The party stated this in reaction to a claim credited to former Governor of the Centre of Learning (Kaduna State), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, alleging that Tinubu was plotting a “life presidency.”
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s spokesman, Hon. Seye Oladejo, said Tinubu’s record showed he had always stood against tenure elongation. He recalled that the President openly resisted attempts by past leaders to extend their stay in office beyond constitutional limits.
“President Tinubu is a lifelong democrat. His political journey is rooted in the pro-democracy struggles of the 1990s, when he stood shoulder to shoulder with other patriots in NADECO, risking his freedom and safety to end the military dictatorship. To now suggest that the same man who resisted tyranny is scheming to perpetuate himself in office is both laughable and shameful,” Oladejo said.
The Lagos APC said Nigeria’s democracy is safeguarded by the constitution, which provides term limits and checks on power. It accused El-Rufai of playing politics with false claims, adding that the former governor always changes positions to serve personal interests.
The statement also criticised El-Rufai’s political record, accusing him of using anti-democratic methods during his years in Kaduna State.
The party argued that his past actions weakened his credibility to question Tinubu’s democratic credentials.
Oladejo added that President Tinubu remains focused on rebuilding the economy, strengthening security, and consolidating democratic governance, thereby paying no attention to political distractions.
The party reaffirmed that Tinubu’s loyalty to the constitution can not be doubted.
