The State Government of the Centre of Excellence, Lagos, has unveiled a new water vending system designed to support revenue growth and provide clean water for communities facing unstable supply.
The move follows a statement issued by Tokunbo Wahab, Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, who explained that the Lagos Water Corporation, working with WaterAid, is setting up an automated kiosk under the ongoing rehabilitation of the Akilo Micro Waterworks.
“Lagos Water Corporation, in partnership with @wateraid, is installing an automated water kiosk as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Akilo Micro Waterworks. When fully commissioned, the Akilo project is expected to supply safe water to over 100,000 people in Akilo and neighbouring communities.
“The project is based on detailed baseline and household studies, so the kiosks and future connections are sited close to the homes and streets that need them most.
“The kiosk will dispense treated water from the Akilo plant using a simple reloadable card-tap to start, tap to stop – so families only pay for what they use, with no guesswork and a clear record of every transaction.
“This is one of several community water points being set up under the project, helping to reduce dependence on unsafe wells and high-cost vendors and making clean, affordable water easier to access for households in and around Akilo.”
Government officials say the kiosk model will serve as both a service to residents and a structured income channel for the state, especially in areas where demand for treated water remains high.
