The Lagos State Government has warned residents to prepare for possible extreme heat conditions as the El Niño climate pattern strengthens and the state approaches the dry season.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning in an advisory, urging residents to adopt preventive measures to safeguard their health and wellbeing.
Wahab explained that Lagos’ high population density, expanding urban development and limited green spaces could worsen the effects of rising temperatures, particularly in densely populated communities.
He warned that the anticipated weather conditions could trigger dehydration, heat discomfort, respiratory challenges and deteriorating air quality, placing children, older persons, pregnant women and outdoor workers at greater risk.
The commissioner called on residents, community leaders, market associations, schools, business owners and employers to prioritise access to clean drinking water, shaded areas and adequate ventilation, particularly for people exposed to prolonged outdoor activities.
He also advised residents to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, minimise strenuous activities during the hottest hours and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Wahab further urged residents to desist from open burning of refuse, stressing the need to protect trees, expand green spaces and adopt responsible waste disposal practices to reduce environmental factors that intensify urban heat.
“Keeping Lagos safe from the impacts of extreme heat requires action from all of us,” he said, adding that the government would continue to strengthen public awareness and work with relevant agencies and stakeholders to improve preparedness and response.
He called on households, businesses and communities to take collective responsibility for reducing the effects of extreme heat, urging residents to act early and look out for vulnerable members of society.
