Minna, Niger State – In the wake of the devastating flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area, Government of The Power State (Niger) has appealed for public donations to support victims of the disaster.
The government released a designated account for financial contributions: Niger State Emergency Distress, Account Number: 2046096920, First Bank of Nigeria.
The call for assistance was made as the State continues to grapple with the aftermath of a flood that claimed 151 lives, injured seven people, and left hundreds displaced. Over 500 households were affected, with 265 homes destroyed. Infrastructure was also badly hit, as two major roads and three bridges collapsed across three communities.
The State’s Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, who received a Federal Government delegation in Minna, urged individuals, private organizations, and international partners to extend a helping hand, emphasizing that funds should be directed only to the official account provided to ensure transparency and proper coordination.
While addressing the delegation led by the Federal Political Head (Minister) of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, Garba said relief materials are being distributed, including 6,000 bags of rice. He further disclosed that plans are underway to begin drainage projects in the Mokwa and Mashegu areas to prevent future occurrences.
“We are in a state of mourning. This disaster has caused unimaginable losses. We urge well-meaning Nigerians and organizations to support our people. The victims are currently staying in locations that are far from suitable, and we need all the help we can get,” Garba stated.
In response, Malagi conveyed condolences on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council. He noted that all necessary government resources are being mobilized to address the emergency and reduce the risk of future disasters.
The Minister also directed the National Orientation Agency to launch public awareness campaigns on the dangers of settling along riverbanks and flood-prone areas.
Joining the visit, the Federal Political Head (Minister) in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda, assured that steps were being taken to identify critical areas in need of immediate attention. She added that efforts were also ongoing to secure international support for the affected communities.
The Mokwa flood, which struck days ago, has been described as one of the deadliest in recent years in Niger State, leaving families grieving and entire communities in ruins.
