The Ondo State Police Command in the Sunshine State said it has commenced an investigation into a false kidnapping report in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area, which led to the assault of a commercial motorcyclist and triggered public disorder in the area.
As revealed by the State Police Command on Friday, the incident followed a complaint made on Wednesday, June 4, 2026, by Miss Abigael Bright, who alleged that a commercial motorcyclist, Mr. Rasheed Awojobi of Idi Mango Street, Ore, attempted to kidnap her while conveying her from Ogo Oluwa Street to Idi Mango area.
The Command stated that the allegation spread quickly within the community, which drew the attention of residents who attacked the motorcyclist before police operatives arrived and restored order. The victim, according to the report, sustained injuries to the face and other parts of the body and was taken for medical attention.
Preliminary findings from the police indicate that the allegation was not true. Investigations further revealed that the suspect allegedly shared the claim on her WhatsApp status, which contributed to the spread of the report and heightened tension in the area.
The suspect is currently in police custody and assisting investigators, while the Command said legal action will follow after the conclusion of investigations. The injured motorcyclist has been treated and is receiving care.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix Ohagwu, expressed concern over the spread of unverified reports and their effect on public order.
He stated that “false allegations, especially those bordering on kidnapping and other serious offences, have the potential to trigger violent reactions, endanger innocent citizens, and undermine public confidence in lawful processes.”
The Commissioner condemned the mob action against the motorcyclist, stressing that “no person should be subjected to punishment based on mere suspicion or allegation. Jungle justice is a criminal act that frequently results in the violation of human rights, miscarriage of justice, and avoidable loss of lives.”
He called on residents to report grievances to security agencies rather than resorting to self-help, adding that those involved in mob attacks or the spread of false information capable of causing disorder will be held accountable under the law.
The Command reaffirmed its alignment with the policing direction of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, focused on professional conduct, intelligence-led operations, community cooperation, and respect for human rights.
Residents were advised to verify information before sharing it, especially on social media platforms, and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station for proper investigation.
The Ondo State Police Command said it remains committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring that justice is served in all cases.
