The Rivers State House of Assembly has said the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, is progressing in line with constitutional provisions.
The position was contained in a press release issued on January 9, 2026, by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The House stated that the impeachment proceedings, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, followed the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). It disclosed that two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct against the Governor and the Deputy Governor have been forwarded to them by the Speaker, while their responses are being awaited
The Assembly said it remains conscious of its constitutional role to act on behalf of the people of Rivers State in checking infractions by the Governor, Deputy Governor or any other officer of the state government, adding that it is duty-bound to carry out that responsibility.
Reacting to reports circulating in some quarters, the House dismissed claims that the impeachment process has been suspended or discontinued. It accused certain individuals and media platforms of spreading false narratives aimed at misleading the public and creating tension between the legislature and Nigerians.
The Assembly reaffirmed its resolve to carry out its responsibilities without yielding to what it described as blackmail or threats, insisting that such actions would not derail the exercise.
The House also expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their prayers and encouragement, while extending gratitude to stakeholders and leaders at various levels who have shown support. It conveyed goodwill to democrats who believe in Nigeria’s democratic project.
